Contemplations from the Belly of a Bird

Standard

Sitting in a plane I have lots of time to contemplate things.

The pilot told us we were a little heavy.  He said it was extra fuel but I wondered if it was the planes collective “American-ness” that was causing our plane to be over weight.

Then I thought about the cost of gas and the associated carbon foot print of dumping it.

During this time I also contemplate my own mortality, oxygen masks and the intricate workings of a seat belt.  Additionally, I question the seaworthiness of my seat cushion as a floatation device.

As my “overweight” gray bird lumbers down the runway I notice all of its sounds and wonder if it is suppose to making them. As she tucks her legs up into her body my contemplation is put to rest.

Until many hours later, when after an hour of turbulence, I am rendered unable to read or to sleep.

Then I think about the  inner workings of my gray bird and being dropped off on the other side of the world, and not in the Pacific Ocean.
